Formed from the skeletal fragments of marine organisms such as corals, forams, and mollusks, it is mainly composed of minerals calcite and aragonite which are just the different crystal forms of calcium carbonate. Like any other lime components, lime stone lumps too has manifold applications. It is estimated that 10 percent of sedimentary rocks are lime stone. While some forms of lime stones are formed of grains, some lime stones are formed completely by the chemical precipitation of calcite and aragonite, the primary source of calcite being marine organisms. This calcite can be precipitated through ground water, depending on factors like temperature, pH level, and ion concentration.

Lime stone powder has multiple applications. While lime stone is very common in architecture, it is also a raw material for the manufacture of a diverse array of chemical compounds like the slaked lime, quick lime, mortar, and cement. Crushed for use as aggregate, lime stone also finds application in the glass making industry. It is also used in blast furnaces as it binds with silica and other impurities thereby helping in the refining of steel. Another environmental use of lime stone is in the remineralisation of purified water.

To improve the sulphur emission control programs, researches are going on in different parts of the world, and a notable one in the lot is that of flue gas desulphurization or the FGD process. As stringent rules regarding the sulphur dioxide emissions are being enacted in numerous countries, a number of methods like the wet scrubbing, spray dry, wet sulphuric acid process are being used. Most FGD systems employ a two stage process, first one being the removal of fly ash and the next one removal of sulphur. However, attempts are being made to combine the two processes and make it happen in the scrubber vessel. In the wet scrubbing FGD, the flue gas passes initially through a fly ash remover, usually an electrostatic precipitator and then through an SO2 filter. In the dry scrubbing fgd, SO2 first reacts with the sorbent and the passes through a particulate control device. For a typical coal powered factory, the flue gas desulphurization process is expected to remove at least 90 percent of the sulphur present in flue gases.

Grades Of Limestone Powder Used In Different Industries

  1. Cement Industry : Limestone containing about 45% CaO and above is usually preferred for the manufacturing of cement Magnesia content in the stone should ideally be less than 3%, although as high as 5% MgO is used by the industry The proportion of AI2O3 + Fe2O3: SiO2 should be 1:2:5. Magnesia sulphur and phosphorus are regarding as most undesirable impurities
  2. Iron & Steel Industry : Limestone Lumps are used in this industry both in the blast furnace to lower the temperature of melting and second to from calcium silicate by combining with silica of the iron ore, which comes out as slag. For this purpose, good fluxing Limestone Lumps low in acid constituents such as silica, alumina, sulphur and phosphorus is required.   4. Glass Industry : Glass industry requires Limestone Lumps (CaCO3: 94.5%). Combined CaCO3 and MgCO3 should be 97.5%
  5. Fertilizers industry : The latest use of Limestone Lumps are introduced in the country is in the manufacture of calcium ammonium fertilizers where Limestone Lumps are used only as carrier. For this purpose, Limestone Lumps must contain MgCO3 + CaCO3 85% (min.) SiO2 5% (max.) and acid in-soluble 14% (max.)
